- On the basis of the agreement with Nuvoil, a student of Universidad Veracruzana develops a thesis on separation of phases extracted from the underground.
Dulce Azucena Melo, holding a master’s degree in applied engineering from Universidad Veracruzana, shares in an interview her thesis project and the benefits conferred in her research by the agreement with Nuvoil Mexican Business Group, which was another successfully case of academy-industry collaboration.
What was the objective of your project?
Within the oil industry, one of the most important steps in the crude oil production is the separation of the phases extracted from the underground. In my thesis, I suggest to create a strategy to optimize the separation process of the mixture to be extracted or the concerned fluids, which in this case are gas, oil and water.
Now after having studied the extraction and separation process in the terrestrial fields of Poza Rica, what solution did you suggest?
The implementation of a device, a helical static mixing device which does not use energy but integrates the necessary add-on components to separate gas from other liquid phases since there is a big difference in the density of both of them. The force created by the mixing device facilitates the separation between both of them, concentrating the densest fluid, the liquid in the pipe walls and the gas in the center.
What were the advantages or benefits conferred by the Agreement with Nuvoil for your project?
It allowed me access to the field information for collecting data that are not easy to obtain in the hydrocarbon sector in Mexico and Veracruz, in particular. This type of agreements benefits students like me who are seeking to generate knowledge for the sector.
____
Nuvoil Mexican Business Group and the Maximum House of Studies in the State of Veracruz entered into a Collaboration Agreement in 2016, which aimed at developing patentable technology in artificial lift systems which optimizes the production of mature oil wells in the country.
The multidisciplinary project considers the participation of renowned researchers. Additionally, it implies the formation and development of university talent since it involves students and provides them with facilities to carry out their research projects, which are led by specialists, directly in the field.
